‘Talking to the dead’ – Quaker meeting +Creative conversation, Thursday 4th June 2026

Dear Friends,

Please join us on Thursday, June 4, 2026  at 7PM BST/2PM EDT for our next Creative Conversation.  Andrea Henley Heyn will share some thoughts about “Talking to the Dead.”  The talk is intended to stimulate a discussion about how we conceptualize the afterlife.

We look forward to a lively conversation and hope that you will come and add your voice.

We welcome your thoughts about how to make these conversations more meaningful.  Address your comments to the working group at nontheistfriend@gmail.com.

Note: Friends Journal recently sent out a request for submissions on the topic of Nontheist Friends for a future edition.  The request reads: “We invite articles from Friends coming from nontheist, atheist, or agnostic perspectives. We’re interested in both the theology (non-theology?) of belief and also the experiences of being a part of the Friends spectrum.” Submissions are due by 9/21/2026 for a December 2026 publication date.

Careful Discernment or Spiritual Timidity

Friends might like to read this from Friends Journal:

https://www.friendsjournal.org/careful-discernment-or-spiritual-timidity/

(Friends Journal, the major publication of Friends Publishing Corporation, is the consolidation of two previous Quaker publications and corporations, Friends Intelligencer (Hicksite) and The Friend (Orthodox), at the time of reunification of the two yearly meetings in Philadelphia.)

The Next Testimony

I think this article in ‘Friends Journal’ (USA) for a new Quaker Testimony deserves to be much more widely read, both amongst Quakers and in the wider world:

The Next Testimony

What a defence/definition of politics and democracy (and equality). George Fox, Gerrard Winstanley and John Lilburne would have thought just so.

Note also the advert there for ‘God’s Big Tent‘ – in these fractious times, can Friends in Britain offer this kind of vision – a testimony to democracy and equality?

Diversity

Our conference this year (29th-31st March 2019 – have you booked yet?) is on the subject(s) of Unity, Diversity and Boundaries.

Perhaps our speakers will be thinking mainly of diversity of belief (and practice) but there are other kinds of diversity (of concern) and here is an interesting article from Friends Journal about racial diversity by an American Friend:

God, Jesus, Christianity, and Quakers

An interesting article from an American non-theist? Friend, Jim Cain, can be found here in Friends Journal (USA – strongly associated with Friends General Conference):
